Top 7

I've been leading a small group of students this year on tues nights. As the year ends up I thought we'd look biographically at people who have inspired other followers of Jesus. Those who God has used, outside the ones listed in scripture, to advance the kingdom. So as we compile the list it seems to be a good question for the council. Who would you include in the list?

Mine
1. Luther
2. Calvin
3. Edwards
4. Augustine
5. Lewis
6. Spurgeon
7. May be Bunyan

Wow! This is a serious question. Alright; Top 7, Kingdom advancement (as if I had any idea):
-Bruce Olson
-C.S. Lewis
-St. Francis of Assisi
-Billy Graham

Gah! I can't think of anyone else that I really want on this list (That someone else hasn't listed) and I have to get to work. That's a personal Top 7 (er, 4), by the way. Rating someone's objective "Kingdom Advancement Index" is not only impossible, but also seems a little foolish (how the heck would I know?)

This obviously can't be a "Top 7 Christians of All Time" list. As James said, that would be impossible for us to determine.

But, if we are compiling a list of seven people in order to talk to a group of believers about their impact on the kingdom, then I would agree with Dave's list with one difference.

I know you are a reformed Episcopalian. That makes this dude enemy number one. But, John Wesley has to make the list. He influenced Christianity in Europe and America as much as anyone over the past 400 years. He had some incorrect beliefs. But, his life and legacy are amazing. If you have never read his journal (the abridged version at least) then you should.

A strong case can also be made for Whitfield, one of my personal favorites. But, I'm not sure who you would bump for him. He is considered one of the top two or three preachers of all time. His effect on the American colonies is unrivaled. Historians generally agree that the three most important figures in pre-revolutionary American history are Benjamin Franklin, Jonathan Edwards and George Whitfield.
